There are important differences between ski jackets and winter jackets
There are several significant differences between a ski jacket and a winter jacket, and these are important to know.
Ski jackets are, as the name suggests, designed for activities on skis and snowboards. They have some technical features that make them ideal for use on the slopes. For example, ski jackets are typically more waterproof and breathable than regular winter jackets. They also often have special features like snow skirts that prevent snow from getting under the jacket, and there are pockets for lift passes, mobile phones, etc.
Winter jackets, including down jackets, on the other hand, are primarily designed for everyday use. They focus more on keeping you warm in cold weather and often have a more casual design and less freedom of movement.
Should I choose a shell ski jacket or an insulated ski jacket?
Shell ski jacket or insulated ski jacket? It depends on your skiing habits and preferred conditions.
Shell jackets for skiing are lightweight, flexible, and windproof, but they require extra layers for warmth. They are well-suited for skiing in mild weather conditions and are great for skiers who like to go fast. Insulated ski jackets are significantly warmer, making them ideal for skiers who get cold easily, and they are generally good to use on days with very low temperatures. If you can't decide, choose one of each type.
Also remember to dress practically under the ski jacket
Dressing correctly under the ski jacket is crucial for ensuring a comfortable day on the slopes. The first step is to choose a moisture-wicking layer, such as a ski base layer. This layer keeps your skin dry and warm. Then add an insulating mid-layer, such as a fleece sweater or a hybrid jacket. Finally, you can put on your new ski jacket, and you are ready to head outside.
Remember, multiple thin layers are smarter than one thick layer, as it allows you to adjust your clothing to changing temperatures and activity levels.
Important criteria for a ski jacket
It is very individual which criteria one values most when buying a new ski jacket. However, there are some criteria that most skiers consider important. These include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Waterproofness: Protects against snow and moisture
- Breathability: Allows sweat to evaporate
- Insulation: Keeps you warm in cold weather
- Fit: Comfortable and allows movement
- Features: Snow skirts, pockets for lift passes and personal items, etc.
- Durability: Withstands frequent use
- Style: Personal preferences regarding design, colors, etc.
Especially factors like breathability, insulation, fit, and durability are factors that we recommend placing particular emphasis on.
We can already reveal that we, of course, have ski jackets that match all the criteria mentioned above.
What does the specified water column pressure mean for the ski jacket?
Water column pressure is measured in millimeters and indicates how much water pressure the jacket can withstand before water seeps through. The higher the number, the more waterproof the jacket.
For ski jackets, a water column pressure of at least 10,000 mm is typically recommended to ensure good protection, but we also sell ski jackets with a higher water column pressure – up to 20,000 mm. This number is particularly important for skiers who often end up lying in the snow after falls and/or plan longer days on the slopes.
The ski jacket must – of course – also be the right size
It is, of course, also crucial that you choose your new ski jacket in the right size. We offer ski jackets in all common sizes – from XXS to XXL. If you don't know which size to choose, use a size guide or contact our customer service.
